– Nokia 9000i Communicator will be available in October from selected GSM carriers-

(Dallas, September 10, 1997) — Nokia today announced the availability of the GSM 1900 version of the award-winning Nokia 9000i Communicator, the world’s first all-in-one communications device, at PCS ’97 in Dallas. The revolutionary Nokia 9000i Communicator combines digital voice and data services and personal organizer functions into a single, small-sized and easy-to-use unit and will be available from selected GSM 1900 carriers on October 14, 1997. In addition, the Americas version of the Nokia 9000i Communicator will have a comprehensive set of new features and advanced PC connectivity when available.

Far more than a full-featured digital phone, the Nokia 9000i Communicator enables users to send and receive faxes, e-mails and short messages as well as access Internet services and corporate and public databases. Other applications include an electronic calendar, address book, notepad and calculator. The Nokia 9000 Communicator for GSM was introduced last year and sales started in August 1996. It is currently sold in some 30 GSM 900 MHz and GSM 1800 MHz countries in Europe and Asia.

„We believe that with the launch of the Nokia 9000i Communicator, GSM 1900 operators have a great opportunity to serve totally new customer segments. Typical customers for the Nokia 9000i Communicator are managers and sales personnel, large corporate organizations or vertical market groups. In addition, there has been considerable interest from companies to optimize the Nokia 9000i Communicator to serve their specific needs,“ said K-P Wilska, President of Nokia Mobile Phones Inc.

The operating system platform provides an open development environment so customers will be able to add new innovative functionality as it becomes available from service providers, software developers and Nokia. The operating system platform, called GEOS, was developed by Geoworks. Nokia has worked with third-party companies to provide connectivity and value-added solutions that will provide customized business tools for vertical market applications.

Nokia was the first manufacturer to supply digital wireless data cards to connect laptop computers and wireless phones for wireless data transmission. The introduction of the Nokia 9000i Communicator is a major step for Nokia in the Americas and the industry in the area of mobile data products and demonstrates Nokia’s continued leadership in wireless data solutions.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled $8.5 billion in 1996. Nokia employs more than 34,000 people in 45 countries.
