Tips About NewDeal and OS/2

Using Two GEOS.INI Files

Some users have two GEOS.INI files: One for running NewDeal from DOS, and one for running it from OS/2. They use a batch file before starting up from DOS that copies DOSGEOS.INI to GEOS.INI and, after closing down NewDeal, copies OS2GEOS.INI to GEOS.INI. As a result, whenever running from OS/2, the OS/2 specific GEOS.INI file is active and responds to the mouse driver from OS/2.

Pasting Text From OS/2 to NewDeal

You can paste text from OS/2 into NewDeal. The trick is that NewDeal has to be running in a window and the active application should be something that can receive text. Start NewDeal in a full screen session then start up the Text File Editor. Next use Alt+Home to switch to a windowed session. Then start the OS/2 System Editor and open a file. Select some text and copy it to the clipboard. Finally, go to the windowed NewDeal session and select Paste. The cursor in the Text File Editor may began to jump forward and return just like it would if you were typing in the words. The tricky thing is that no words may appear as the cursor moves, but once the cursor stops moving, the words appear all at once.

Another option to transfer text from the OS/2 environment to NewDeal: cut and paste between the OS/2 app and the OS/2 System Editor, save to a file, and then import the file from within NewDeal.

Convert NewDeal Icons to OS/2 Icons

Start up the OS/2 icon editor and then start a full screen session of NewDeal. When you have the icons you want in view, use Alt+Home to switch to a windowed session. Then pull down the Window menu on the NewDeal session and select Mark, which allows you to select the icon you want. Next select Copy and then go to the OS/2 Icon Editor and select Paste.

Mouse Issues

OS/2 permits you to have an AUTOEXEC.BAT file for each DOS application. In the apps-specific or general AUTOEXEC.BAT file, invoke the VMOUSE driver in the MDOS directory of OS/2. Try choosing the NewDeal driver named „MOUSE.COM or MOUSE.SYS.“
